Sydney newspapers and the NSW Law enforcement described at some time that the fireplace was brought on by an electrical fault. A contemporaneous coronial inquest was not able to ascertain the cause of the fireplace, but concluded that Luna Park's administrators and operators experienced failed inside their obligation of care to the park's patrons.i
